About student projects

A student project at the Management School is when a Masters student (MSc or MBA) carries out their research dissertation project, as part of their studies, within an organisational setting. Students can work with your company on a particular issue or challenge set by you as the host organisation, and guided by us, for a period of around three to four months.

The student will usually undertake the project from May through to August, and will provide the organisation with a feedback in September, after the project is completed.

Why choose our students for your project

Sheffield University Management School is ranked in the top one per cent of business and management schools globally, attracting some of the top students from around the world. A student studying a Masters programme at postgraduate level has usually already completed an undergraduate degree. They are looking to specialise their knowledge and acquire the expertise needed to develop a career in their chosen area of management.

Your organisation will benefit from fresh ideas and enthusiasm of our students, as well as the latest in management thinking and practice. It's a chance for you to examine a particular business issue and gain extra support in finding possible solutions.

Our expertise

Projects can examine issues in all areas of business, which we have broadly summarised as:

  • People and HR
  • Operations and logistics
  • Finance
  • Management
  • Marketing
  • Arts and culture

How can you help

As an alumnus, this a chance for you to provide students with the opportunity to build upon their CV and gain experience of working on real business issues, helping them prepare for work in the graduate market. Although students often take up projects within Sheffield and the city region, your project could be based elsewhere in the UK.

All students will need someone who can act as a guide and a point of contact within your organisation throughout the project, supporting them when necessary. They may also require access to people, contacts or information that have been identified as part of the research element of the project, which you will need to facilitate. It isn’t necessary to provide a designated desk for the student, although they will need a suitable work space when carrying out tasks on-site. The detail of your support will vary depending on the type of project, and this will be discussed with our Business Development Manager.
